How do fire rated downlights prevent fire spreading?

Every ceiling acts as a barrier to a fire spreading between floors. To fit any recessed downlight means cutting a hole in the ceiling, which reduces the ceiling’s ability to prevent the spread of fire between floors. Fire rated down lights must be fitted if there is living accommodation above, for example an upstairs or loft bedroom or a bathroom.

Each downlight features an intumescent material which reacts to the heat of the fire. It is a fireproof material that expands to such an extent that it seals the fitting completely and blocks the hole in which the down light is fitted. This prevents the spread of fire between floors through the ceiling cut-outs. The minimum rating is 30 minutes, but 60 or 90 minutes is desirable.

Fire rated downlights are sometimes referred to as fireproof. This leads many people to think that these downlights are designed in such a way that they cannot catch fire. This is not the case, as all the downlights that we supply are ‘F’ rated, which means that they can be mounted on a normally flammable surface, and will not catch fire in any event.
