Get the right lighting for your wall art

There are a few things to consider, such as the type of artwork being highlighted, the type of lighting required and the correct size of picture light for the piece. Pictures and other artwork should be positioned with the centre of the piece at eye level. In most cases, that would be about 5ft above floor level.

The picture light should be positioned centrally and directly above to give the best illumination. An adjustable head allows you to change the beam when fitted, and the ability to dim your picture light ensures flexibility.

As a general rule, your picture light should be at least half of the overall width of the artwork, including the frame. If your personal preference is for a brighter or dimmer effect, then adjust these sizes accordingly. Please use the table below as a general guide to help you choose the right size light to illuminate your pictures and art.

For a frame of up to 24 inches, minimum 300mm (12-inch) picture light.

For a frame of up to 30 inches, minimum 375mm (15-inch) picture light.

For a frame of up to 45 inches, minimum 565mm (22-inch) picture light.

LED picture lights are great and come in a variety of colour temperatures and your choice of warm white, white or cool white will change the look of your picture. They produce very little heat, tiny amounts of UV and are ideal for lighting pictures. Available in warm white, daylight white and cool white, each colour temperature gives a different look.
