The Benefits of GU10 LED Downlights

They run on mains power, making them easier to fit in with your current lighting system. But there are other reasons to invest in GU10 fixtures for your downlights.

  • Easy to fit and available in fire-rated and IP rated
  • Do not have a limited lifetime
  • Can be used with high power LED GU10 lamp bulbs
  • Easily dimmed whether halogen or LED bulbs are used
  • Do not need to be disposed of if bulb fails, just replace the bulb
  • Available in all finishes and types including fixed, tilting and wall washer
  • No transformer required, reducing installation cost

Mains voltage GU10 downlights require a reflector bulb to operate. The outgoing halogen bulbs were bright but ran very hot, making them prone to frequent failure. Today, low energy LED replacements are key. With an operational life of 25,000-50,000 hours, these are super bright, efficient and run very cool.

GU10 LED bulbs are available in a choice of colour temperatures, ranging from warm white (2300–3200k), daylight white (4000-5000k) and cool white (5500-6500k). Warm white is more desirable for living areas, and some people prefer daylight white for kitchens and bathrooms. Cool white is just entering the blue spectrum and best avoided for inside a home.

Always use a soft start trailing edge dimmer to dim your GU10 downlights. The soft start increases the bulb life considerably and the trailing edge technology ensure super smooth dimming from 10% to 100%.  For more information about dimming, please have a look at our ‘Choosing the correct dimmer switch’ article.

Finally, unlike most dedicated LED downlights, using a GU10 bulb allows you to change the beam angle. GU10 bulbs are available as a 36° spot light up to a 60° flood beam. This difference in angle can be crucial in getting the correct light levels in a room. A low ceiling room benefits from a 60° flood, whilst kitchen worktops for example could benefit from a 36° spot.
