Lighting Your Home with Industrial Pendant Lights

Light is necessary for all life to flourish. When there is no natural light then we create it artificially and that is how it has been for hundreds of thousands of years. We first achieved this by burning things and using the light from the flame. Where there is no light, there can be no beauty.

Fast-forward to the 19th century, when gaslights gave the first constant industrial style of illumination in many homes and streets. Frankly, it was rubbish and dangerous, but that’s all there was. It wasn’t until the late 19th century, when the first commercially available electric light bulbs were available, that lighting the home became a reality for those lucky enough to be able to afford it.

Initially, electric lighting comprised of a cable to carry the current, a holder for the lamp and a means of attaching it to the ceiling. These are known as pendant lights and are still around today in many different styles.

The industrial revolution changed lighting design forever. Mass production and manufacturing techniques allowed light fittings to become more decorative, although early industrial lighting designs were simple and functional.

They typically featured a metal ceiling mount, twisted cable and metal shade, usually a spun coolie or domed design with a ventilated top to allow the heat from the lamp to rise and escape. They were sometimes fitted with a wire cage to protect the light bulb from impact and those below from being burned when touching a bare lamp.

These styles remain the backbone of industrial pendant lighting that are again fashionable today, and for good reason. Industrial they may be, but pendant lights are simple, functional, stylish and particularly suited to modern or traditional kitchens.

Metal shade industrial lights are available in a multitude of different finishes, often with contrasting inner coatings to either reflect the light or soften it. Industrial style lighting fitted with a protective metal cage or opal glass globe can be particularly attractive and can be used in hallways, living rooms, vestibules and covered porches.
