Traditional Chandeliers
Traditional chandeliers have been around since medieval times. Originally made from planks, with nails knocked through and candles placed on the protruding spikes. These purely functional early chandeliers were designed to provide illumination in dingy spaces and worked pretty well. They remained largely unchanged for centuries, using candles or oil and wicks to produce light.
The late 19th century brought with it the advent of electricity. Thomas Edison patented the electric light bulb in 1879, and the first electricity generator was brought on line in 1881. In 1882, the Electric Light Act was passed. In 1835, the first arc lamp was produced, closely followed by veer increasing access to electricity. The rest they say is history.
What Makes a Chandelier Traditional?
Simply put, traditional chandeliers can be recognised by a combination of factors, including the quality of craftsmanship, the materials used and its style. The classic looks are unmistakable and ensure that your traditional chandelier will stand the test of time.
Traditional chandeliers draw inspiration from different eras, adapted to our modern day lifestyle. Many designs feature intricate scrolled arms and elaborate frames reminiscent of the Victorian era. Others are simpler and more elegant, often made from solid brass and featuring simple, slender forms. These features are typical of the Edwardian style.
A traditional chandelier is usually made from high quality materials that will stand the test of time and look good for many years. Traditional techniques are still used to this day and the designer’s attention to detail is there for all to see.
Simply put, traditional chandeliers have a timeless quality that can elevate a room without every looking dated or out of fashion. They can be statement pieces or simply blend into the room, but they always create an ambiance and make any room more inviting.
Where can you use Traditional Chandeliers?
Their timeless elegance makes them perfect for adding glamour to any room, no matter what size it is. When you choose a traditional chandelier, you are choosing something that will outlive any short-term trends and blend into any changes in decor that you may make over the coming years and are ideal for lighting any room in your home.
Used in a hallway, a traditional chandelier creates a great first impression and welcomes guests.
A beautiful chandelier over a dining room table provides ambient light when dining and is a focal point at other times.
Chandeliers in living rooms create an opulent sophistication. They provide plenty of light when needed, whilst making the room more inviting.
Smaller three or five light chandeliers are fantastic in a bedroom. The style can be luxurious, feminine or romantic to transform your bedroom into a serene space.
Considerations
Will it be bright enough?
Consider your lighting requirements in the room and decide how many arms or bulbs you need to give you the best possible light. If you are unsure, go up a size and fit a dimmer switch. This gives you the flexibility of being able to control the ambient light levels to suit you.
Will it big enough or too large?
Scale and proportion are important. Your chandelier needs to appropriate for the room size. Too large and it will overwhelm the space. Too small and it may be too dim and get lost in the space.
What Style?
Take a look around your room for style cues. What colour is the carpet, upholstery and soft fabrics in the room. What finishes are the door handles and switches. Most importantly, what is the overall style of the room and its function. These elements should all point you in the right direction.
