Chandelier is the term for multi-armed lighting. The main requirements are that it has more than one lamp and is normally suspended from the ceiling, although there are now an increasing number of flush and semi flush fitting chandeliers available for use in rooms with lower ceilings. The number of arms on a chandelier usually range from 3 to as many as 36 for a very large design. Designs include traditional, modern and contemporary styles.

Crystal Chandelier Lighting

Crystal chandeliers are made using a strong frame housing the lamp arms that is then decorated with masses of cut crystal. The frame needs to be strong as lead crystal is very heavy. When illuminated, the crystals refract the light produced and spread the whole colour spectrum throughout the space in which it is installed.

Lead crystal has been around for a long time and is greatly prized for its lighting properties. It is widely recognised that 24% lead content and over gives the best quality crystal. Once produced the crystals are then faceted like a diamond so that they maximise the rainbow effect that the light produces when it shines through.

The weight of a chandelier adorned with crystal can be considerable. Higher quality crystal is considerably heavier than that of lower quality. On larger chandeliers, the crystal can account for 75% of the total weight of the fitting, amounting to 60Kg or more. Our largest contemporary crystal chandelier weighs in at 70Kg!

Modern manufacturing techniques mean that they are now available in almost any finish imaginable. It can sometimes be difficult deciding which to choose from such a variety so it is worth taking inspiration from your room decor before deciding whether to go for a modern or traditional approach as well as what colour and finish you’d like your chandelier to be.

Some people are put off by the thought that the crystals have to be removed every few weeks and cleaned. Nothing could be further from the truth.
