Hanging Lanterns

Hanging lanterns often get overlooked, yet they are well suited to lighting your hallway. A quality lantern hanging proudly in the hall, stairway or landing creates a great first impression. It adds an extra dimension to traditional or modern homes and produces a lovely, warm welcoming feel.

The Simplest Form of Lantern

Hanging lanterns of some sort have been around for hundreds of years as a form of lighting. They started as very simple affairs with a four-sided frame, usually made by the local blacksmith, featuring a hinged door, glass panels and an open-top.

A candle would have been placed in the bottom to give light. As time passed, those who could afford them had larger lanterns made that were capable of holding twenty or more candles. These were fitted with either a rope or chain pulley system and hung from the ceiling to illuminate larger spaces.

Candles have been replaced with modern light bulbs, but the initial design concept remains to this day. They still feature a metal frame and either open sides or glass panels, with many traditional or more contemporary designs to choose from.

Modern techniques allow the construction of more complex designs in a comprehensive range of materials and finishes. Modern glass manufacturing gives us the option of round lanterns using curved glass.
